Please Don’t Say These Things to Us Black People
You may not realise that they can be slightly offensive
It’s 2024 and we are certainly living in tempestuous times, where anything you say can offend someone even if you may not necessarily intend to. However, there are some things you can do or not do to avoid these awkward altercations where you may offend someone, in this case, a black person.
As a black person living in the Western world, I always found myself in the ‘minority’ group of people wherever I was. In high school, I was the only black person in my class and when I worked my first 9–5 I was, yet again, the only black person in the office. So I’ve had my fair share of hearing stereotypes about black people.
What is important to note here is that most people do not realise, and they can be completely oblivious that they may be stereotyping or in some cases being outright racist. So I’ve compiled a few things to avoid saying to black people because I am sure other black people are also fed up with hearing it.
1. “I love what you have done with your hair, can I please touch it”
I have been asked many times by people if they can touch my hair.
