There Is No Such Thing as a Child Who Doesn’t Like to Read

They just haven’t learned how to enjoy reading yet.

Reading is more than just an activity for your child. It is the perfect way to bond and spend much-needed quality time with your children.

Reading, to the mind is what exercise is to the body.

I was adamant that my children did not like reading. From a young age, I noticed that reading time was always challenging and stressful in our household. My toddler seemed to be more interested in ripping up the pages of the book than actually reading it (Great Tip for parents of young children — invest in board books that they can't rip up).

My children were easily distracted, running away from me, crying and throwing books around. However, I realised it wasn’t about the book. The environment needed changing, and, even more importantly, my behaviour and attitudes towards reading needed changing.

I had to be 100% in — meaning I had to stop occasionally looking down on my phone and getting distracted. In fact, I no longer have my phone in the room during reading time.

Children, even babies, understand when parents give them their full attention, compared to when they give them part of their attention. I dedicate 20 minutes a day to reading with…
