We’re Not Meant to Live Like This
Humans haven’t evolved to handle the age of digitalisation.
Recently, in probably most of our lifespans we have witnessed the digital revolution. Like many others, I was lucky enough to have a childhood before social media. I grew up in a world where we played outside all day and knocked on our friend’s doors if we wanted to see them. A world before followers, subscribers and likes. A world where the only friends we had were friends in real life.
Recently I came across a podcast which mentioned that for the majority of human existence humans lived in small communities and were hunter-gatherers. In the last few centuries, humans started farming and industrialising.
Just the pace of change in digitalisation has been something humans have never seen before.
Now we live in a world where we are being bombarded by stimuli coming from all directions, all competing for our retention and attention. We follow people on social media and are constantly updated with pictures of their outfits, their birthdays, and their meals. It’s no wonder why so many of us are anxious and depressed. Constantly being inundated with other people’s achievements and milestones, can make anyone feel inadequate or as if they are failing.
